Favorite parent and why: Neither because they were never around
Summary: Ray was born to a wealthy family with parents who were never around. The pair of Neuroscientists were so involved with their work that they didn’t have time to raise their daughter, that was a job for the help. Growing up in a big house with no one but adults around, Ray often found herself bored out of her mind. Reading and anything else she could do around the house didn’t seem to keep her occupied for long. It seemed she had adopted her parents smarts and constantly needed things to hold her focus. Without any siblings, this focus was provided by the staff her parents kept in the house to care for her. Brandt (her personal security guard), Maria (her chef), Joseph (her tutor), and Willard (her butler/maid) were the only people in her life. There were others that helped maintain the estate but they never truly interacted with Ray the way the other four did.
It was one day that Ray was introduced to something that would consume most of her time and energy. She stumbled across Brandt practicing with a few firearms on the far end of the property. Being ex-military of something that Ray wasn’t privy to, he had the skills and talent to keep Ray safe. Plus it didn’t help that he was getting paid a pretty penny for the job as well. After finding him rapidly firing the various guns at targets, Ray demanded to be taught. It took a lot of convincing and bothering until he finally caved. His only argument that her parents wouldn’t like it was quickly squashed when she countered with asking when her parents last checked in on her. As it had been a few months, it was no surprise that he gave in.
However Brandt had no idea that training Ray would lead to the downward spiral that it did. Ray became surprisingly obsessed with mastering the new skills she’d only gotten a taste of. Even going so far as to enter competitions again and again just to push herself more. Working and using guns became second nature for her, something that she could do as easily as breathing. Once she’d managed to never miss a shot, she moved on to other forms of combat. Martial arts, boxing, kickboxing, whatever Brandt could teach her she wanted to know. When he ran out of things for her to learn, he reached out to others and had them come to the estate to teach her.
As years went on Ray only perfected all the skills she had, somehow she never missed a shot. Every single bullet, every single strike, every kick landed with masterful precision. If she ever missed, it was because she wanted to. At first Brandt was mortified by what he had done to Ray, but she didn’t seem to have malicious intent with her new skills. In fact she just seemed more curious to learn and perfect the abilities than anything. All the while not a word had been delivered of her parents. They seemingly disappeared having last contacted Brandt years before letting him know to take care of the estate. That was all they knew of the Becker’s.
Not long after that, there was the outbreak. While the estate was remote and far outside of the city, it was only a matter of time before the estate was also overrun but the other members of the house didn’t seem to think so. They believed that the ground would be safe enough to keep whatever was going on away, however Ray disagreed. Based on what she’d heard so far, it wasn’t going to be pretty. Brandt was the only one who agreed with her unfortunately and in the end it was only the two of them packing up to head out.
Surviving whatever hell had crawled it’s way to the surface proved to be a bit more difficult than they had originally thought. As quick of a shot as both Ray and Brandt were, it took more than one to take out these zombies and that proved detrimental. About a year after having left the estate, Brandt and Ray were jumped by a gang and Brandt lost his life. It was thanks to his sacrifice that Ray was able to escape, however that didn’t make it any easier to deal with.
After Brandt’s death, Ray fell in with some bad crowds. Given her skills and capabilities, she became a useful ally in helping some of the gangs establish power in the rebuilding city. After the second outbreak, those that lurked in the underground seemed to leap at the chance to terrorize survivors. While everyone seemed to be battling zombies and thugs, Ray found her way into the fighting pits. Having grown bored once more, she decided to volunteer to fight. Of course they were skeptical but she simply asked them if they wanted a win or a loss. Jokingly they said a win and Ray delivered.
Time after time they pitted her against opponents telling her whether to win or lose and she didn’t seem to mind. She could come and go as she pleased, plus they were paying her decently whether it was a win or a loss. It seemed to be a win-win situation. So this is where Ray finds herself, enjoying the freedom to come and go from the pits (which was not something most fighters could say they had). However she is growing bored, looks like she’ll have to find something else to entertain her.
